Summary

A rare malignant cardiac tumor, right atrial myxosarcoma, was diagnosed in a dog. This case highlights the aggressive nature and potential spread of this intracavitary cardiac tumor in canine patients.

Background:

  • Intracavitary cardiac tumors are rare in dogs.
  • Myxoma represents a subset of these rare tumors.
  • Malignant forms of cardiac myxoma are exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • A Staffordshire bull terrier presented with weight loss, exercise intolerance, and collapse.
  • Echocardiography revealed an intracavitary cardiac tumor in the right atrium.
  • The dog was euthanized due to the tumor's advanced stage.

Findings:

  • A right atrial myxosarcoma was diagnosed.
  • Histopathology confirmed the malignant nature of the cardiac tumor.
  • Secondary metastasis to the lungs and lymph nodes was observed.

Implications:

  • This is the first reported case of canine cardiac myxosarcoma.
  • The findings suggest myxosarcomas can exhibit aggressive behavior and metastasis.
  • Further research into canine cardiac tumors is warranted for improved diagnosis and treatment strategies.
