Summary

Risperidone may be a cost-effective treatment for psychotic symptoms, especially for patients intolerant to other antipsychotics or without substance abuse history. This study found significant cost savings due to reduced hospitalizations in responsive patients.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Pharmacoeconomics
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Risperidone is a newer antipsychotic with higher acquisition costs than conventional agents.
  • Its precise clinical and economic role in managing psychiatric illnesses requires further definition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between patient demographic variables and therapeutic outcomes with risperidone.
  • To analyze the financial impact of risperidone on the treatment of psychotic symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A 2-year retrospective cohort, intent-to-treat analysis of patients initiated on risperidone.
  • Clinical outcomes assessed via changes in hospitalized days, psychotropic medication counts, and Clinical Global Impression scores.
  • Logistic regression and cost-benefit analysis were employed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A clinical response to risperidone was observed in 54% of patients completing a therapeutic trial.
  • Previous treatment intolerance and lack of substance abuse history predicted therapeutic success.
  • Hospitalization rates declined by 43% in responders, yielding net annual savings of $147,962.

Conclusions:

  • Risperidone demonstrates efficacy in patients with prior antipsychotic treatment failure.
  • Patients intolerant to traditional antipsychotics and without substance abuse history showed unique responsiveness.
  • Reduced hospitalizations suggest risperidone may be a cost-effective management strategy for psychotic symptoms.
