    Summary

    Electroencephalography (EEG) detects nerve cell dysfunction in dementia patients but cannot predict cerebral atrophy severity. This study found no correlation between EEG abnormalities and CT scan-measured brain atrophy in elderly individuals.

    Background:

    • Dementia is a significant health concern in the elderly population.
    • Clinical signs of dementia necessitate further investigation into underlying causes.
    • Cerebral atrophy and electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities are common findings in dementia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between electroencephalography (EEG) findings and cerebral atrophy in elderly patients with dementia.
    • To determine if EEG abnormalities can predict the presence or severity of diffuse cerebral atrophy.

    Main Methods:

    • Thirty-five elderly patients with clinical signs of dementia were included.
    • Computed tomography (CT) scans were used to assess the presence and severity of diffuse cerebral atrophy.

  • Electroencephalography (EEG) was performed to evaluate for diffuse abnormalities, particularly diffuse slowing.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant correlation was found between the presence or severity of diffuse EEG abnormalities and the degree of cerebral atrophy measured by CT scan.
    • Patients with normal or near-normal EEGs showed no discernible difference in cerebral atrophy compared to those with severe diffuse slowing.

    Conclusions:

    • While EEG can identify physiological dysfunction in dementia patients, it is not a reliable predictor of diffuse cerebral atrophy.
    • CT scan remains a more direct measure for assessing cerebral atrophy in this population.
