Background:

Limited understanding exists regarding patient satisfaction with psychiatric services among Black and ethnic minority groups.
Investigating the influence of perceived ethnicity versus differing illness understanding on patient satisfaction is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore patient satisfaction with psychiatric in-patient care among White British and ethnic minority patients.
To determine whether perceived ethnicity or the patient's explanatory model of illness is more strongly associated with satisfaction.
To assess the impact of concordance between patient and psychiatrist explanatory models on satisfaction.

Main Methods:

Qualitative interviews were conducted with 21 White British and 63 ethnic minority psychiatric in-patients.
Patients provided opinions on in-patient care, treatment preferences, and their explanatory models of illness.
Statistical analysis explored associations between ethnicity, explanatory models, and satisfaction.

Main Results:

Patient satisfaction was not significantly associated with ethnic origin.
The patient's explanatory model of illness showed a stronger association with satisfaction than ethnicity.
Concordance between patient and psychiatrist explanatory models was the most significant predictor of satisfaction.

Conclusions:

Shared understanding of illness, reflected in explanatory models, is more critical for patient satisfaction than ethnic background.
Psychiatric services should focus on achieving concordance in explanatory models to enhance patient satisfaction across diverse populations.
Addressing discrepancies in illness understanding may improve the quality of psychiatric care for ethnic minority patients.
