Psychosocial factors associated with smoking in Air Force recruits

The ability to identify modifiable risk factors associated with smoking in U.S. Air Force recruits may prove useful in developing smoking prevention programs. We assessed 257 recruits for selected psychosocial factors previously found to be associated with smoking in young adults in the general population. Cross-sectional analysis revealed significant differences between smokers and nonsmokers for six of the eight factors addressed. Implications for the development of smoking prevention programs are discussed.
