We developed velocity-coded color MR angiography to add flow direction information to MR angiograms. This technique clearly shows blood flow direction, distinguishing arteries from veins and identifying flow changes.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Radiology
  • Cardiovascular Imaging

Background:

  • Phase-contrast MR angiography (PC-MRA) provides quantitative flow data.
  • Standard MR angiography (MRA) visualizes vascular anatomy but lacks flow direction information.
  • Integrating flow direction into MRA can enhance diagnostic capabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a novel velocity-coded color MR angiography technique.
  • To incorporate blood flow direction information into standard MR angiograms.
  • To improve the visualization and interpretation of vascular structures and flow dynamics.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a method using velocity-phase image data from PC-MRA.
  • Reconstructed velocity-phase images from PC-MRA performed on 30 patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Assigned color based on flow direction from two projection images and superimposed them onto the maximum intensity projection MRA.
  • Main Results:

    • The velocity-coded color MR angiogram clearly depicted flow direction in the neck vasculature.
    • Arteries and veins were readily distinguishable based on the color-coded flow.
    • Abnormal flow patterns, such as subclavian steal, were successfully identified.

    Conclusions:

    • Velocity-coded color MR angiography effectively adds crucial flow direction information to standard MRA.
    • This technique enhances the differentiation between arteries and veins.
    • It provides a valuable tool for diagnosing vascular diseases and assessing flow dynamics.
