A Rottweiler experienced recurrent lameness due to a digit mass. Surgical amputation successfully removed three distinct neoplasms, including squamous cell carcinomas, with no recurrence observed.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary oncology
  • Canine pathology

Background:

  • Recurrent digital masses in dogs can cause lameness and require investigation.
  • Neoplasms of the digits in canine patients present diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • An eight-and-a-half-year-old Rottweiler presented with progressive lameness over 32 months.
  • A mass on a digit was the cause of lameness, necessitating repeated surgical amputations.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination revealed three distinct neoplastic diagnoses: two squamous cell carcinomas, one melanocytoma, and one intracutaneous cornifying epithelioma.
  • Surgical excision of the affected digit and mass was performed on four separate occasions.

Implications:

  • Complete surgical excision is an effective treatment for these specific canine digital neoplasms.
