Summary

Anorexia nervosa patients show impaired smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) even after weight restoration. These eye movement abnormalities correlate with obsessive-compulsive symptoms, suggesting persistent neurophysiological traits.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Anorexia nervosa is associated with various neurophysiological alterations.
  • Eye movement abnormalities, including smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM), have been observed in individuals with anorexia nervosa.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate SPEM and saccadic performance in anorexia nervosa patients during weight restoration.
  • To explore potential links between eye movement performance and clinical features in anorexia nervosa.

Main Methods:

  • SPEM parameters were recorded in 28 female anorexia nervosa outpatients and 28 comparison subjects.
  • Patients underwent clinical assessments including the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) and Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS).

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Anorexia nervosa patients exhibited slightly worse SPEM performance compared to controls.
  • No significant relationship was found between SPEM impairment and general psychopathology or depressive symptoms.
  • Obsessive-compulsive symptoms and perfectionism scores were associated with the severity of eye movement alterations.

Conclusions:

  • SPEM abnormalities persist in a subgroup of anorexia nervosa patients even after weight restoration.
  • The findings support the hypothesis of persistent neurophysiological and psychopathological traits in anorexia nervosa.
  • Eye movement performance may serve as a potential biomarker for certain clinical features in anorexia nervosa.
