Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Intracardiac ectopic thyroid is an exceptionally rare condition with no prior documented cases in Mexico.
  • Thyroid tissue is normally found only in the neck.

Observation:

  • A 33-year-old woman presented with an intracardiac tumor located in the interventricular septum.
  • The patient maintained normal thyroid function throughout her evaluation and treatment.

Findings:

  • Intraoperative biopsy confirmed the tumor consisted of typical thyroid follicles.
  • Surgical resection of the tumor created a septal defect, which was successfully repaired using a Dacron patch.
  • Two-year follow-up revealed normal echocardiographic findings, excellent clinical condition, and stable thyroid function.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the possibility of ectopic thyroid tissue presenting as an intracardiac tumor.
  • Successful surgical management and long-term follow-up are feasible for this rare condition.
  • Adds a unique case to the limited literature on intracardiac ectopic thyroid, specifically from Mexico.
