Multiple tarsal coalitions in the same foot are more common than previously believed. Computed tomography (CT) scans of both feet are recommended for diagnosing suspected tarsal coalition.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Pediatric Orthopedics
  • Foot and Ankle Surgery

Background:

  • Tarsal coalition is a congenital condition affecting the foot and ankle.
  • Diagnosis has historically relied on plain films, with limitations in detecting subtle coalitions.
  • Computed tomography (CT) has improved diagnostic capabilities.

Observation:

  • A review of 60 cases of tarsal coalition was conducted.
  • Thirty patients with 53 coalitions had CT and surgical documentation.
  • Six patients presented with multiple coalitions in the same foot.

Findings:

  • Multiple tarsal coalitions in the same foot are more prevalent than previously recognized.
  • CT imaging, particularly in transaxial and coronal planes, enhances detection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Literature review indicates an increase in reported cases post-CT implementation.
  • Implications:

    • CT evaluation of both feet is recommended for suspected tarsal coalition.
    • Early and accurate diagnosis of multiple coalitions can guide treatment strategies.
    • Further research into the prevalence and clinical significance of multiple tarsal coalitions is warranted.
