Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Oncology
  • Skeletal Dysplasias
  • Tumor Biology

Background:

  • Multiple cartilaginous exostoses (MCE) are benign bone tumors.
  • MCE can rarely undergo malignant transformation.
  • Synchronous malignant transformation in MCE is exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with multiple large chondrosarcomas.
  • Sarcomas originated from the left pubic bone and left femur.
  • The patient had a history of multiple cartilaginous exostoses.

Findings:

  • Successful treatment via hindquarter amputation.
  • No evidence of relapse 30 months post-surgery.
  • This represents the first reported case of synchronous chondrosarcoma development in MCE.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Highlights the potential for aggressive, multifocal malignancy in MCE.
  • Underscores the importance of vigilant monitoring for MCE patients.
  • Suggests potential genetic or molecular pathways driving synchronous transformation.
