Norepinephrine and carbachol injections in rats

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Physiology

    Background:

    • The lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) plays a crucial role in regulating feeding and drinking behaviors.
    • Neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and carbachol are implicated in autonomic functions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of norepinephrine and carbachol on thermoregulation, heart rate, and peripheral vasomotor activity in rats.
    • To compare the physiological responses elicited by these two neurotransmitters when administered into the LHA.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats with cannulae implanted in the LHA received injections of norepinephrine or carbachol.
    • Physiological parameters including rectal temperature, cardiac rate, and peripheral vasomotor activity were continuously monitored.
    • Subjects were curarized and artificially respirated during the experiment.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Both norepinephrine and carbachol induced hypothermia, bradycardia, and vasodilatation.
    • Carbachol produced a significantly greater bradycardic effect compared to norepinephrine.
    • Norepinephrine resulted in more pronounced hypothermia and vasodilatation than carbachol.

    Conclusions:

    • Norepinephrine and carbachol exert distinct yet overlapping effects on autonomic functions when microinjected into the LHA.
    • The LHA is a critical site for modulating thermoregulation and cardiovascular responses.
    • Differential effects suggest specific roles for noradrenergic and cholinergic systems in autonomic control.
