Background:

  • Exercise training is recommended post-myocardial infarction (MI) or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) to enhance exercise tolerance.
  • Spontaneous improvements in exercise capacity occur in some patients post-MI/CABG, but the influence of left ventricular (LV) function is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of left ventricular ejection fraction on exercise capacity improvements following MI or CABG.
  • To determine the efficacy of structured exercise rehabilitation in patients with varying LV function post-cardiac events.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty-seven patients 1 month post-MI or CABG were randomized into exercise training or control groups.
  • Patients were stratified based on ejection fraction (>50% or <40%) and underwent 8 weeks of rehabilitation or usual care.

  • Maximal exercise testing with gas exchange and lactate analysis was performed at baseline and after 8 weeks.

    • Most patients with preserved left ventricular function post-MI or CABG experience spontaneous improvements in exercise capacity within 1-3 months.
