    Background:

    • Palatal fusion is a critical developmental process in mammals.
    • Understanding the cellular mechanisms of palatal fusion is essential for identifying causes of cleft palate.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To examine the surface changes of developing secondary palatal shelves and palate in Wistar rats.
    • To investigate the cellular events occurring on the medial aspect of palatal shelves prior to fusion.

    Main Methods:

    • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to visualize the surface morphology of developing rat palates.
    • Observations were made at different time points during palatal development, starting from the 16th day post-insemination.

    Main Results:

    • Progressive degeneration of cell surfaces was observed on the medial aspect of the palatal shelves starting on day 16.
    • This degeneration involved loss of microvilli, indistinct intercellular boundaries, and the formation of intercellular clefts.
