Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Cardiology
  • Congenital Heart Disease
  • Cardiovascular Surgery

Background:

  • A five-year-old boy presented with complex congenital heart defects in 1990.
  • Diagnoses included severe aortic valve stenosis, bicuspid aortic valve, and stenosis of the right pulmonary artery.

Observation:

  • Initial diagnosis was based on physical examination, electrocardiogram (EKG), chest X-ray (RTG), and echocardiogram (ECHO).
  • Invasive diagnostic methods confirmed the severity of the cardiac anomalies.

Findings:

  • The patient had severe aortic valve stenosis (Stenosis aorte valvularis gr. majoris), a bicuspid aortic valve (Aorta bivelaris), and stenosis of the right pulmonary artery (Stenosis r. sinistri ar. pulmonalis).
  • Surgical intervention was deemed necessary.

Implications:

  • Surgical repair was postponed due to the conflict in Sarajevo.
  • The child underwent successful surgery in Cambridge in 1993.
  • The patient is reported to be in good health following the procedure.
