Summary

Corticosteroid allergy is uncommon in Singapore. Fluocinolone acetonide can be removed from standard patch testing, and budesonide should be added to assess steroid hypersensitivity.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate betamethasone 17-valerate, fluocinolone acetonide, and tixocortol pivalate in the standard patch test battery.
  • To assess the prevalence of hypersensitivity to these common topical corticosteroids.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from patients undergoing standard patch testing between January 1994 and December 1996.
  • Identification of patients with positive patch test reactions to betamethasone 17-valerate, fluocinolone acetonide, or tixocortol pivalate.

    • Budesonide is recommended for inclusion, and betamethasone 17-valerate in ethanol may improve detection rates for steroid allergy.
