    Area of Science:

    • Health Services Research
    • Qualitative Research
    • Patient Behavior Studies

    Background:

    • Limited research exists on primary non-compliance with prescriptions.
    • The link between uncashed prescriptions and doctor-patient communication quality is unproven.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the feasibility of gathering sensitive patient data via interviews.
    • To explore patient reasons for not cashing prescriptions using qualitative methods.

    Main Methods:

    • A questionnaire was given to 1000 consecutive surgical patients.
    • Follow-up interviews were conducted with patients who did not cash their prescriptions.

    Main Results:

    • 22 patients participated in interviews.
    • Reasons for non-compliance included lower over-the-counter costs (9/22), cost as a general factor (5/22), doctor's permission, poor illness understanding, and desire for control (13/22 did not obtain medication).

    Conclusions:

    • It is feasible to interview patients about behaviors impacting the doctor-patient relationship.
    • Prescribing varies by doctor; patient control and understanding are significant factors beyond prescription cost.
