Background:

  • Extranasal gliomas are rare tumors presenting diagnostic challenges due to nonspecific symptoms.
  • Prenatal diagnosis of a frontal tumor in a newborn prompted further investigation.

Observation:

  • A newborn presented with a red-violet mass at the nasal root, appearing to tense.
  • Initial imaging (skull X-ray, brain ultrasound) was normal.
  • Tumor ultrasound and CT scan revealed a solid mass with potential intracranial communication.

Findings:

  • Neurosurgical intervention was performed, and no central nervous system (CNS) communication was found.
  • Histological diagnosis confirmed an extranasal glioma.
  • Nasal root tumors can mimic normal skin, complicating diagnostic accuracy.

  • Diagnostic tests may not reliably detect CNS communication, increasing the risk of surgical errors.
  • Direct management by surgical teams with neurosurgical expertise is recommended for these malformations.
