Summary

Limb lengthening using the De Bastiani callotasis technique with the Orthofix external fixator effectively corrected moderate leg length discrepancies in 23 patients. This method proved satisfactory for both pediatric and adult cases.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Leg length discrepancy is a common orthopedic condition.
  • The De Bastiani technique and Orthofix external fixator are established methods for limb lengthening.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of the De Bastiani limb lengthening technique using the Orthofix external fixator.
  • To assess complication rates and healing indices in patients undergoing limb lengthening.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 23 patients (25 limbs) treated between June 1989 and March 1995.
  • Application of the De Bastiani callotasis technique with the Orthofix external fixator for femur and tibia lengthening.
  • Follow-up duration ranged from 12 to 81 months.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Average lengthening achieved was 5.11 cm (13.6% of original bone length), with a maximum of 8 cm.
  • The mean healing index was 38.6 days/cm.
  • A complication rate of 36% was observed.

Conclusions:

  • Limb lengthening by the De Bastiani method is a satisfactory procedure for moderate limb-length discrepancies.
  • The technique is suitable for both pediatric and adult patients.
  • Further research may focus on optimizing complication management.
