Summary

Serum leptin levels are elevated in individuals with hypothyroidism, suggesting a potential role in managing weight gain associated with the condition. Hyperthyroidism did not show significant changes in leptin levels compared to controls.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Metabolic Regulation
  • Thyroid Disease

Background:

  • Leptin is a key hormone regulating body weight.
  • Its role in thyroid dysfunction requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of immunoreactive leptin (leptin-IR) in functional thyroid disease.
  • To compare serum leptin-IR levels in hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, and control groups.

Main Methods:

  • Serum leptin-IR levels were quantified using radioimmunoassay (RIA).
  • 23 hypothyroid, 19 hyperthyroid patients, and 21 controls were included.
  • Comparisons were made between groups and with euthyroid controls matched for BMI.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Serum leptin-IR levels were significantly increased in hypothyroid patients compared to controls (21.0 ± 2.7 µg/l vs. 10.8 ± 2.1 µg/l, P = 0.0044).
  • No significant difference in leptin-IR was observed in hyperthyroid patients compared to controls.
  • Elevated leptin levels in hypothyroidism remained significant even when matched for body mass index (P = 0.0333).
  • Conclusions:

    • Elevated serum leptin levels in hypothyroidism may not solely reflect body weight changes.
    • Increased leptin may play a role in counteracting the weight gain associated with hypothyroidism.
