Summary

Anoxic depolarization (AD) reliably predicts irreversible brain injury after ischemia. A 15-minute duration of AD is critical for severe neuronal damage, more so than reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF).

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between anoxic depolarization (AD) and ischemia-induced neuronal injury.
  • To determine if AD is a more reliable predictor of irreversible brain injury than reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF).

Main Methods:

  • Transient forebrain ischemia was induced in 28 rats.
  • Direct current shifts, electrocorticogram, and cortical blood flow (CoBF) were monitored.
  • Histopathological analysis of the cortex was performed one week post-ischemia.
