Summary

Precocious pubarche (PP) in girls increases the risk of developing adolescent hirsutism. Prepubertal hypertrichosis (PH) further elevates this risk. Early treatment for certain conditions like non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NC-CAH) can prevent hirsutism.

Background:

  • Hirsutism in adolescent girls often begins as an aesthetic concern and can lead to infertility and polycystic ovary syndrome due to prolonged hyperandrogenism.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if specific prepubertal clinical signs can predict the development of hirsutism in adolescent girls.
  • To investigate the relationship between precocious pubarche (PP) and subsequent hirsutism, with or without prepubertal hypertrichosis (PH).

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal follow-up of 70 girls with precocious pubarche (PP), with or without prepubertal hypertrichosis (PH), until 3 years post-menarche.
  • Retrospective analysis of 139 hirsute teenagers to assess the incidence of PP.

    Conclusions:

    • Precocious pubarche (PP) is a significant risk factor for developing postpubertal hirsutism in adolescent girls.
    • The presence of prepubertal hypertrichosis (PH) alongside PP appears to further increase the likelihood of developing hirsutism.
    • Glucocorticoid therapy in NC-CAH patients effectively prevents hirsutism, suggesting potential benefits of early intervention in other PP cases.
