Background:

  • A known drug interaction exists between CoQ10 and warfarin, an anticoagulant medication.

Observation:

  • A 72-year-old female patient on warfarin exhibited decreased responsiveness to her medication.
  • This reduced warfarin efficacy coincided with her reported intake of CoQ10 supplements.

Findings:

  • Discontinuation of CoQ10 supplementation restored the patient's normal warfarin responsiveness.
  • The chemical similarity between CoQ10 and Vitamin K analogs is a proposed mechanism for this interaction.

Implications:

  • Patients using warfarin should be vigilant about potential CoQ10-induced treatment failure.
  • Healthcare providers must inquire about dietary supplement and alternative medication use in patients prescribed warfarin.
