    Summary

    Leptospirosis can cause anterior uveitis, an eye inflammation. This study found it often affects both eyes but is usually mild, though some cases require steroid treatment.

    Background:

    • Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by pathogenic Leptospira spirochetes.
    • Ocular manifestations of leptospirosis, such as uveitis, are increasingly recognized.
    • Anterior uveitis is a common intraocular inflammation affecting the iris and ciliary body.

    Observation:

    • Seven patients diagnosed with anterior uveitis secondary to leptospirosis were analyzed.
    • Diagnosis was confirmed via serologic tests and by excluding other potential causes.
    • Most patients (6/7) were from a known leptospirosis-endemic region during an epidemic period.

    Findings:

    • Anterior uveitis presented bilaterally in 5 out of 7 patients.
    • The condition was generally mild, with only 2 patients requiring systemic corticosteroid therapy.
    • Posterior segment ocular involvement was not observed in any of the presented cases.

    Implications:

    • Leptospirosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of anterior uveitis, especially in endemic areas.
    • Prompt diagnosis and management can prevent severe ocular complications.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the pathogenesis and long-term outcomes of leptospiral uveitis.
