    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Gastroenterology

    Background:

    • Chronic persistent hepatitis is generally a mild liver condition.
    • Diagnosis is typically confirmed via liver biopsy.

    Observation:

    • A 65-year-old female presented with obstructive jaundice and progressive deterioration.
    • Standard investigations ruled out mechanical obstruction and common viral liver diseases.
    • Liver biopsy confirmed chronic persistent hepatitis.

    Findings:

    • The patient exhibited an atypical clinical presentation of obstructive jaundice.
    • Rapid deterioration was observed despite the absence of a clear obstruction.
    • Corticosteroid therapy resulted in complete clinical and biochemical recovery.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of considering atypical presentations of chronic persistent hepatitis.
    • Corticosteroid treatment may be effective in managing specific, severe clinical manifestations.
    • Further research into non-standard therapeutic approaches for hepatitis variants is warranted.
