Malignant otitis externa, a severe ear infection, is challenging to treat. This case study shows adjuvant hyperbaric oxygen therapy successfully treated a patient with optic neuritis, a rare survival outcome.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Malignant otitis externa (MOE) is a severe necrotizing infection of the external auditory canal.
  • MOE poses significant treatment and monitoring challenges, often requiring aggressive management.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with malignant otitis externa complicated by optic neuritis.
  • The condition was refractory to standard therapeutic interventions, highlighting treatment resistance.

Findings:

  • Adjuvant hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) led to a complete cure in this refractory case.
  • This represents the only reported survival of MOE with concurrent optic neuritis.

Implications:

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be a viable adjuvant treatment for severe, refractory malignant otitis externa, especially with neurological complications.
