Summary

This study found a weak correlation between laboratory laser measurements and the Periotest method for evaluating implant framework fit. Clinicians should use careful observation to detect misfit at the implant prosthodontic interface.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Implantology
  • Prosthodontics
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Accurate framework fit is crucial in implant prosthodontics to prevent complications.
  • Microgaps between implant frameworks and abutments can go undetected until complications arise.
  • A reliable method for objectively evaluating implant prosthodontic interface fit is needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the correlation between laboratory laser measurements of abutment analog-framework fit and intraoral fit assessed by the Periotest method.
  • To investigate the utility of laser videography and the Periotest method in quantifying framework fit.
  • To explore potential objective evaluation tools for implant prosthodontic fit.

Main Methods:

  • A clinical investigation involving 15 subjects with implant-supported fixed partial dentures.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Framework fit was measured in the laboratory using laser videography (six measurements).
  • Intraoral framework fit was quantified using the Periotest method; data analyzed via correlation and regression.
  • Main Results:

    • The overall correlation coefficient between laser measurement and Periotest was weak (r = 0.51).
    • Regression analysis indicated a significant intercept for laser videography measurements (p < 0.05).
    • Periotest values were negative (mean -7.3 ± 1.2), with variance explained by vertical (delta Z, +0.471) and XY plane misfits (X-YVD, -0.244).

    Conclusions:

    • No single laser measurement variable strongly correlated with the Periotest method for identifying misfit.
    • Weakly correlated laser misfit variables may be clinically observable with increased scrutiny.
    • Objective evaluation of implant framework fit requires further refinement beyond current laser and Periotest methods.
