Summary

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) remained intact in patients with chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after allogeneic bone marrow transplants. This study found no evidence of BBB disruption in cerebrospinal fluid proteins, suggesting no central nervous system involvement in chronic GVHD.

  • The blood-brain barrier (BBB) maintains central nervous system (CNS) immune privilege.
  • Chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a potential complication following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT).
  • CNS involvement in chronic GVHD has not been previously investigated regarding BBB integrity.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in patients with chronic GVHD post-BMT.
  • To determine the incidence and potential pathophysiology of CNS involvement in chronic GVHD.
  • To analyze cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins for evidence of BBB disruption.

Summary:

  • This study analyzed 33 CSF and serum samples from chronic myeloid leukemia patients before and after BMT, and during chronic GVHD.
