Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Epileptology
  • Neuropathology

Background:

  • Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) is a rare neuroepithelial neoplasm.
  • DNT was first described in 1988 and incorporated into the WHO classification in 1993.
  • This study presents the first reported case of DNT in Latin-American literature.

Observation:

  • A 16-year-old female presented with complex partial seizures since age five.
  • Anti-epileptic drug treatment provided incomplete seizure control.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a left temporal lobe lesion.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection of the temporal lobe lesion was performed.
  • Histological examination confirmed the tumor as DNT, showing atypical neuroglial proliferation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Immunohistochemistry confirmed both glial (GFAP, S-100) and neuronal (NSE, synaptophysin) components.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights DNT as a cause of refractory epilepsy in adolescents.
    • Accurate diagnosis and surgical management are crucial for DNT.
    • Further research into DNT pathogenesis and treatment is warranted.
