Summary

Hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis (HUV) predominantly affects females and often indicates underlying systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). HUV patients exhibit distinct immunofluorescence findings and neutrophilia compared to normocomplementemic cases.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Immunology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Urticarial vasculitis presents with persistent urticarial lesions and leukocytoclastic vasculitis.
  • Hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis (HUV) is a specific subtype of urticarial vasculitis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical presentation of urticarial vasculitis.
  • To identify factors predicting connective tissue disease in urticarial vasculitis patients.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical, histologic, and immunologic data from 132 urticarial vasculitis patients were analyzed.
  • Features of hypocomplementemic patients were compared to normocomplementemic patients.

Main Results:

  • 18% of patients had hypocomplementemia, all female, with 96% showing lupus-compatible immunofluorescence.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was diagnosed in 54% of hypocomplementemic patients.
  • Normocomplementemic patients showed less frequent neutrophilia and a lower incidence of SLE.
  • Conclusions:

    • Hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis patients are more likely female and have distinct biopsy and immunofluorescence findings.
    • HUV is proposed as a subset of SLE sharing clinical, laboratory, and immunologic characteristics.
