We report a rare case of thyroid angiosarcoma associated with hyperthyroidism in a woman with toxic multinodular goiter. This rare thyroid cancer presents diagnostic challenges and a poor prognosis.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Thyroid angiosarcoma is an extremely rare and aggressive malignancy.
  • Hyperthyroidism, particularly toxic multinodular goiter, is a common endocrine disorder.

Observation:

  • A 74-year-old woman presented with a rapidly growing toxic multinodular goiter.
  • Diagnostic workup revealed an unusual co-occurrence of thyroid angiosarcoma and hyperthyroidism.

Findings:

  • The angiosarcoma may have contributed to the development of thyrotoxicosis through a vascular effect.
  • This association, though rare, has been noted in other cases, suggesting a potential link.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the diagnostic difficulties associated with thyroid angiosarcoma.

  • The findings underscore the poor prognosis typically associated with this rare tumor, emphasizing the need for early detection and management strategies.
