Summary

The Frankfurt Complaint Questionnaire-Schizophrenia (FCQ-S) scale shows diagnostic sensitivity for schizophrenia. The Frankfurt Complaint Questionnaire-Alcoholism (FCQ-A) scale did not differentiate groups but correlated with alcoholism markers.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • The Frankfurt Complaint Questionnaire (FCQ) has demonstrated a lack of diagnostic specificity in prior research.
  • Two novel subscales, FCQ-S (for schizophrenia) and FCQ-A (for alcoholism), were developed in a previous study.
  • Replicating the diagnostic sensitivity of these new subscales is crucial for their clinical utility.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the diagnostic sensitivity of the FCQ-S and FCQ-A subscales.
  • To assess the ability of these subscales to differentiate between patient groups with distinct psychiatric conditions.

Main Methods:

  • The study included four groups: schizophrenics with marked negative symptoms (n=25), schizophrenics with mild/no negative symptoms (n=25), alcoholics (n=25), and obsessive-compulsive disorder patients (n=15).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Participants were assessed using the original FCQ subscales and total score, alongside the newly developed FCQ-S and FCQ-A subscales.
  • Statistical analyses were performed to compare scores across the different patient groups.
  • Main Results:

    • The original FCQ subscales and total score did not yield significant differences between the groups.
    • The FCQ-S subscale demonstrated significantly higher scores in both schizophrenic groups compared to the alcoholic and OCD groups.
    • The FCQ-A subscale did not differentiate between the patient groups but showed a significant correlation with established alcoholism markers.

    Conclusions:

    • The FCQ-S subscale shows promising diagnostic sensitivity for identifying schizophrenia, even in the presence of varying negative symptom severity.
    • The FCQ-A subscale requires further refinement as it did not reliably distinguish alcoholics from other patient groups in this study.
    • These findings support the potential utility of the FCQ-S for schizophrenia screening while highlighting the need for further validation of the FCQ-A.
