Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Thoracoscopic sympathectomy (TSSYM) is a surgical intervention.
  • The safety and efficacy of TSSYM require evaluation for various thoracic conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and efficacy of thoracoscopic sympathectomy (TSSYM).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of 48 patients across four US medical centers.
  • TSSYM performed for reflex sympathetic dystrophy, hyperhidrosis palmaris, Raynaud's upper extremity ischemia, and splanchnic pain.
  • Standard surgical technique involved sympathetic chain resection; laser or electro-ablation were not used.

Main Results:

  • TSSYM was performed for reflex sympathetic dystrophy (27 patients), hyperhidrosis palmaris (15 patients), and other conditions (4 patients).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Average procedure involved 2.9 ports and 0.8 chest tubes per patient.
  • Mean hospital stay was 1.8 days, indicating a short recovery period.
  • Conclusions:

    • Thoracoscopic sympathectomy (TSSYM) is a safe and effective treatment.
    • TSSYM is suitable for a range of thoracic disorders.
    • The minimally invasive nature contributes to a short hospital stay.
