Abstract:
Modern cardiac surgery has been based on cardiopulmonary bypass, myocardial protection, aortic cross-clamping, and median sternotomy. Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) has proven to be an effective treatment for patients who require surgical revascularization of the myocardium. Reports regarding the systemic effects of cardiopulmonary bypass abound in the literature. Such effects include hematologic, metabolic, pulmonary, cardiac, and cognitive dysfunction. Less invasive procedures have initiated a dramatic shift in treatment paradigms as well as reducing the cost of treatment. This article will discuss the MIDCAB--its history, a description of the surgical procedure, indications for use and patient selection, advantages and a perioperative plan including patient education and physical assessment.
