A rare complication of infectious endocarditis, left atrial dissection, was visualized using trans-esophageal echocardiography in a patient with mitral and aortic valve involvement. This finding is novel as left atrial dissection has not been previously reported in infectious endocarditis.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Cardiac Surgery
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Infectious endocarditis commonly affects heart valves, potentially leading to severe complications.
  • Left atrial dissection is a known but rare complication, typically associated with cardiac surgery.

Observation:

  • A case of infectious endocarditis involving both mitral and aortic valves is presented.
  • Transesophageal echocardiography was utilized for diagnostic imaging.

Findings:

  • Transesophageal echocardiography successfully visualized a left atrial dissection in the affected patient.
  • This represents the first reported instance of left atrial dissection occurring as a direct consequence of infectious endocarditis.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Highlights a previously undocumented complication of infectious endocarditis.
  • May prompt further investigation into the mechanisms and prevalence of atrial dissection in infective endocarditis.
  • Emphasizes the importance of advanced echocardiography in diagnosing rare cardiac complications.
