Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical outcomes and relative merits of posterior and laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
  • To evaluate patient recovery and surgical efficiency between the two adrenalectomy approaches.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patients with adrenal tumors operated on via posterior approach (n=56) and transabdominal laparoscopic approach (n=12).
  • Data collected between January 1981 and May 1997.

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy demonstrated significantly reduced blood loss (50 mL vs 150 mL).

  • Posterior adrenalectomy had a shorter operative time (120 minutes vs 160 minutes).

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is increasingly favored over posterior adrenalectomy for most patients.
  • The benefits of laparoscopic surgery include faster recovery and reduced patient morbidity.
