Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Gastrointestinal carcinoids are rare neuroendocrine tumors.
  • Descriptive epidemiology provides crucial data on disease patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the epidemiology of gastrointestinal carcinoids in the province of Florence.
  • To analyze incidence, mortality, and survival rates.

Main Methods:

  • Data from the Tuscany Tumour Registry (1985-1991) were analyzed.
  • Population-based study in the province of Florence.
  • Inclusion of all reported gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors.

Main Results:

  • 53 cases of gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors were identified.
  • The age-adjusted incidence rate was 0.42/100,000.
  • Five-year survival rates were 66.1% (observed) and 75.1% (relative).

Conclusions:

  • Gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors have a low incidence in the study area.
  • Appendiceal carcinoids showed the best prognosis, colon and stomach the worst.
  • Overall survival rates are favorable, but further investigation into low autopsy rates is warranted.
