Summary

This study investigated whether plasma corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) levels are altered in depressive disorders. Researchers measured CRF, cortisol, and ACTH in patients with major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder. They found that CRF levels were significantly higher in both groups compared to healthy controls. Severe depression was associated with higher CRF levels than mild or moderate cases. The study also found a significant correlation between CRF and cortisol concentrations. These findings suggest that CRF may be a peripheral biomarker for depression and could help understand the biological mechanisms underlying affective illness.
