Ultrasound-guided percutaneous gastrostomy is a safe method for placing gastric feeding tubes when endoscopy fails. This minimally invasive procedure helps stabilize nutritional status in patients with upper gastrointestinal obstruction.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Gastroenterology
  • Interventional Radiology

Background:

  • Endoscopic placement of gastric feeding tubes is not always feasible in patients with upper gastrointestinal obstruction.
  • Alternative methods are needed to ensure adequate enteral nutrition in these challenging cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound (US)-guided percutaneous gastric tube placement.
  • To assess the feasibility, complications, and nutritional outcomes of this technique.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 38 patients with upper gastrointestinal obstruction.
  • Ultrasound guidance was used for percutaneous nutrition tube application.
  • Feasibility, side effects, and nutritional status were monitored over a mean follow-up of 4 months.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Successful US-guided puncture was achieved in 34 out of 38 cases.
  • No major complications related to the puncture were observed.
  • Minor complications included one late dislocation, material breakage in five cases, and two local infections. Nutritional parameters stabilized.

Conclusions:

  • Percutaneous sonographic gastrostomy (PSG) is a safe and minimally invasive option for enteral nutrition when endoscopic placement is not possible.
  • PSG can effectively stabilize nutritional parameters and improve the general condition of patients, particularly those with malignant diseases.
