Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Rhinology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Rigid endoscopy offers direct visualization of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.
  • Biopsies from difficult-to-access sinonasal sites can be obtained under direct vision.
  • While often feasible under local anesthesia, some patients require general anesthesia for nasal biopsies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and reliability of rigid nasal endoscopy for obtaining diagnostic biopsies of sinonasal neoplasms under general anesthesia.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 31 patients undergoing rigid nasal endoscopic biopsy under general anesthesia.
  • A diagnostic biopsy was defined as one yielding a histopathological diagnosis unchanged by subsequent clinical findings or procedures.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A diagnostic biopsy was successfully obtained in 30 out of 31 patients (96.7%).
  • The procedure was found to be easy, safe, and reliable for obtaining tissue samples.

Conclusions:

  • Rigid nasal endoscopy is a highly effective technique for the diagnosis of sinonasal neoplasms.
  • Endoscopic biopsy under general anesthesia is recommended for nasal and paranasal tumors when direct visualization and tissue sampling are required.
