Distribution patterns of inflammatory sinonasal diseases

Background:

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery has increased demand for coronal sinus CT scans.
CT scans provide crucial pre-operative planning information for surgeons.
Babbel et al. identified five patterns of inflammatory sinonasal disease on CT scans.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate sinonasal disease patterns in the local population.
To compare these patterns with those found in the Caucasian population.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of 302 coronal sinus CT scans (March 1993 - September 1995).
Scans utilized 5 mm thickness for posterior sinuses and 3 mm for anterior sinuses.
Analysis compared disease patterns between local and Caucasian populations, and between Chinese and non-Chinese individuals.

Main Results:

No significant difference in disease patterns was observed between Chinese and non-Chinese individuals.
The local population showed a higher prevalence of sinonasal polyposis compared to Caucasians.
The local population also exhibited more sphenoethmoidal recess obstruction than Caucasians.

Conclusions:

Smaller nasal passages in Asians, particularly Chinese, may contribute to higher rates of Type III and Type IV sinonasal disease.
Increased allergen exposure in the local population could also be a factor in the prevalence of Type IV disease.
