An atypical presentation of endobronchial tuberculosis mimicked lung cancer in a 45-year-old female. Prompt diagnosis via biopsy and response to antitubercular treatment confirmed the tuberculosis diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Endobronchial tuberculosis (EBTB) can present atypically, mimicking other pulmonary conditions.
  • Differential diagnosis of non-resolving pneumonia is crucial for effective treatment.

Observation:

  • A 45-year-old female presented with non-resolving pneumonia.
  • Radiological imaging (CT-scan) and initial bronchoscopy suggested bronchogenic carcinoma or adenoma.
  • Gross findings during bronchoscopy also favored malignancy.

Findings:

  • Bronchoscopic biopsy revealed caseating granulomatous lesions, characteristic of tuberculosis.
  • The patient responded successfully to antitubercular treatment.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case highlights the importance of considering tuberculosis in the differential diagnosis of suspected lung malignancies, especially in endemic areas.
  • Atypical presentations of EBTB necessitate thorough histopathological examination for accurate diagnosis.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment of EBTB can prevent misdiagnosis and ensure favorable outcomes.
