Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Simple phobias frequently co-occur with other anxiety disorders.
  • Understanding the characteristics of comorbid simple phobias is crucial for effective treatment.
  • Differentiating patients with and without comorbid simple phobias can inform clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify clinical and demographic differences between patients with simple phobias comorbid with anxiety disorders and those with anxiety disorders alone.
  • To describe the characteristics, comorbidities, and treatment of simple phobias in a naturalistic study of anxiety disorders.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter, longitudinal, naturalistic study of 711 subjects with anxiety disorders.
  • Comparison of 115 subjects with comorbid simple phobias against 596 subjects without simple phobias.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of demographic data, comorbidity, treatment received, quality of life, episode characteristics, phobia types, and course of illness.
  • Main Results:

    • Subjects with simple phobias had higher rates of additional comorbid anxiety disorders.
    • Common simple phobias included fears of heights and animals; the mean episode length was 22.43 years with moderate severity.
    • Comorbid simple phobias were less common in uncomplicated panic disorder but more common in posttraumatic stress disorder.
    • No significant differences were found in treatment received or quality of life between groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Simple phobia is often a chronic, moderately severe illness with underutilization of effective behavioral treatments.
    • Uncomplicated panic disorder may confer a degree of resistance to the development of simple phobias.
    • Further research into the specific mechanisms and treatment optimization for comorbid simple phobias is warranted.
