Summary

Power-based duplex sonography (PD) significantly improves calf vein identification for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) diagnosis when used with frequency-based colour duplex sonography (CD). This complementary approach enhances diagnostic accuracy without compromising results for acute DVT detection.

  • A prospective, comparative study was conducted at a university hospital in Switzerland.
  • Fifty consecutive patients with clinically suspected DVT underwent CD of the complete deep venous system and complementary PD of paired calf veins.
  • Venography served as the reference test for DVT diagnosis in all patients, except for three with failed vein puncture.

Main Results:

  • Complementary PD significantly increased the complete identification of calf veins from 80.5% with CD alone to 97.9% (p=0.007).

  • This combined approach does not lead to a loss of diagnostic accuracy for acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
  • PD is a valuable adjunct to CD for comprehensive evaluation of calf veins in suspected DVT cases.
