Area of Science:

  • Nutritional Epidemiology
  • Dietary Assessment
  • Public Health Nutrition

Background:

  • Understanding dietary fat intake is crucial for public health and disease prevention.
  • Belgian dietary habits and their contribution to fat intake require detailed quantification.
  • Comparison with international data provides context for national dietary patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the contribution of food groups and items to total, saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA), and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fat intake in the Belgian population.
  • To compare Belgian fat intake data with established nutritional guidelines and international dietary patterns (Italian, US, Dutch).

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of food consumption data from the Belgian Interuniversity Research on Nutrition and Health study (n = 11,302).
  • Comparison of macronutrient intakes across different population subgroups.
  • Identification of major food sources contributing to different types of fat intake.

Main Results:

  • Butter (16%) and baking margarine (8%) are the primary contributors to total fat intake.
  • Butter (24%) and cheese (8%) are major sources of SFA; butter (13%) and baking margarine (9%) for MUFA.
  • Diet margarine (23%) and mayonnaise (11%) are significant sources of PUFA in the Belgian diet.

Conclusions:

  • Specific food items like butter and margarines play a dominant role in Belgian fat consumption.
  • Findings highlight the need for targeted dietary recommendations to manage SFA, MUFA, and PUFA intake.
  • The study provides valuable data for public health initiatives and dietary guidelines in Belgium.
