Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Periodontology
  • Oral Surgery

Background:

  • Aberrant lingual or labial frenula are recognized etiological factors in progressive gingival recession.
  • Surgical intervention, such as frenotomy, is often necessary to correct these anomalies.
  • Augmentation with keratinized tissue is frequently indicated following frenulum separation or removal.

Observation:

  • A case report details a patient presenting with issues related to aberrant mandibular frenula.
  • The patient underwent a surgical procedure involving the mandible.
  • The surgical technique combined frenotomy with a free gingival graft.

Findings:

  • The described case successfully utilized mandibular labial frenotomy.
  • This procedure was performed in conjunction with a free gingival graft.
  • The combined approach addressed the aberrant frenulum and aimed to increase keratinized tissue.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a viable surgical approach for managing gingival recession caused by aberrant frenula.
  • Combining frenotomy with free gingival grafting offers a potential solution for tissue augmentation.
  • The findings suggest this technique may be beneficial in similar clinical scenarios in periodontology.
