Summary

Chlamydia may cause chronic prostatitis. Researchers found chlamydial infection markers in men with prostatitis but not in those with prostatodynia, suggesting a link.

Role of Chlamydia trachomatis in epididymitis. Part I: Direct and serologic diagnosis.

Medical science monitor : international medical journal of experimental and clinical research·2001

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Chronic prostatitis affects many men, with infectious agents often suspected but not definitively identified.
  • Chlamydia trachomatis is a common sexually transmitted bacterium implicated in various genitourinary conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of Chlamydia trachomatis as a potential causative agent in chronic or subacute prostatitis.
  • To differentiate between patients with inflammatory prostatitis and those with prostatodynia regarding chlamydial infection.

Main Methods:

  • Urethral swabs and expressed prostatic secretions (EPS) were analyzed for various pathogens, including Chlamydia trachomatis.
  • Serum anti-chlamydial IgG antibodies were measured to assess past or current infection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients were categorized into inflammatory prostatitis (Group I) and prostatodynia (Group II) based on leucocyte counts in EPS.
  • Main Results:

    • Chlamydial antigen was detected in the urethra and EPS of 14.3% and 21.4% of Group I patients, respectively.
    • No current chlamydial infection was found in Group II patients.
    • Significantly higher prevalence of serum anti-chlamydial IgG antibodies was observed in Group I (30.9%) compared to Group II (8.3%).

    Conclusions:

    • Chlamydia trachomatis is a potential causative agent in a subset of patients with chronic prostatitis.
    • The presence of chlamydial infection markers supports its role in the inflammatory prostatitis group.
    • Further research is warranted to confirm the etiological role of chlamydia in chronic prostatitis.
