Summary

Linear focal elastosis (LFE) presents as striae-like bands. This study reports two adolescent cases, potentially representing an early form of LFE with less prominent elastosis.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Histopathology
  • Connective tissue diseases

Background:

  • Linear focal elastosis (LFE), also known as elastotic striae, was first described in 1989.
  • Characterized by striae-like yellow palpable bands on the back, primarily affecting elderly males.
  • Previously, only about 14 cases of LFE have been reported in the literature.

Observation:

  • The study identified two Korean adolescent males presenting with linear, reddish, palpable bands.
  • These bands were located across their backs and included some atrophic elements.
  • Clinical presentation differed from the classic description of LFE.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination revealed elastosis that was less prominent than in previously reported LFE cases.
  • The observed elastotic changes suggest a potential variation or early stage of the condition.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Microscopic analysis showed fine wavy bundles of elastic fibers separating collagen in the dermis.
  • Implications:

    • These findings suggest that LFE may occur in younger individuals and present with distinct clinical and histopathological features.
    • The cases may represent an early-evolving form of linear focal elastosis.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the full spectrum and pathogenesis of LFE, especially in diverse age groups.
