Summary

This study found a weak link between foot type (neutral, pronated, supinated) and peak pressure location under the metatarsal heads in healthy adults. Foot biomechanics and other factors influence pressure distribution during barefoot walking.

Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Podiatry
  • Human locomotion

Background:

  • Foot type influences plantar pressure distribution.
  • Understanding pressure patterns is crucial for foot health and injury prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between foot type and the location of peak pressure under the metatarsal heads.
  • To analyze pressure patterns in healthy adults during barefoot walking.

Main Methods:

  • 54 healthy adults (21-39 years) participated.
  • Feet were classified as neutral, pronated, or supinated.
  • Pedobarography was used to identify peak pressure areas (medial, central, lateral) under metatarsal heads during barefoot walking.

Main Results:

  • A significant but very weak relationship was found between foot type and peak pressure location (Fisher's exact test).
  • Prevalence: 49% neutral, 36% pronated, 15% supinated feet.
  • Pressure patterns: 62% central, 26% medial, 12% lateral peak pressure areas.

Conclusions:

  • Foot type is not the sole determinant of peak pressure location under the metatarsal heads.
  • Other biomechanical and intrinsic factors likely play a role in modulating plantar pressure distribution.
