Effects of induction on the mother-baby relationship

Even though a minority of mothers and babies benefit from the sequence of events which starts with induction, continues with active obstetric intervention, and culminates with the baby in the intensive care unit, it is questionable whether this justifies submitting the majority of women to what many of these mothers described as the misery of enforced separation from their infants, and whether we should permit modern technological innovations in the culture of childbirth to risk interfering with the basic human patterns of attachment between parents and their young.
